The Board of Education recently recognized “District Wellness Champions” for 2019-20, which are individuals or schools that have worked diligently to improve health and wellness at their campuses or throughout the community.

The individual honoree was Diane Trailer, a Cook Elementary Grade 6 teacher. She was recognized for getting students involved in physical activity before and after school, as well as for her work to create an outdoor classroom next to the school garden. There, students learned about the connection between a sustainable garden and healthy eating.

“It really does take a team—thank you to my Cook community!” Ms. Trailer said.

The Board also recognized District Wellness Champion school honoree Loma Verde Elementary. Loma Verde was praised for the school’s vast health and wellness efforts including physical activity challenges, focusing on non-food incentives, utilization of the school garden, planning staff wellness outings, and a focus on integrating health and physical education into the culture of the school.

The Chula Vista City Council will recognize the award recipients at its September 15 meeting via livestream. Ms. Trailer received a Lenovo Chromebook and Loma Verde received three Lenovo Chromebooks donated by Computers 2 Kids.

More than 60 nominations were submitted for the Wellness Champion Awards. A subcommittee met virtually to select the recipients and was comprised of a District teacher, County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency representative, City of Chula Vista representative, the District’s Parent Engagement Liaison, and the District’s Physical Education (PE), Health, and Wellness Coordinator. Parents, students, and District staff members were able to nominate candidates for the individual award (parents, students, and staff were all eligible) and/or for the school award.
